A Roentgenological Study on the Sagittal Diameter of the Normal Cervical Spinal Canal in Korean Adults

Abstract
The present study has been undertaken to determine the normal values of the sagittal diameter of the cervical spinal canal in Korean Adults.
The material consisted of 211 Korean adults, 111 males and 100 females, in whom no abnormality was found on the roentgenograms of the cervical spine as well as by clinical examination.
The shortest distance between the posterior aspect of a cervical vertebral body and the junction of the neural arch and the spinous process of the same vertebra was measured on the lateral view of the cervical spine obtained at 72-inch target-film distance.
The mean of measured sagittal diameters of the cervical spinal canal at various levels were as follows:
Sex Number MeanS. D. (mm) Range(mm) P 90% Tolerance

As shown above, the range and individual difference were considerably wide, the writer evaluated the ratio of the anteroposterior diameter of a cervical vertebral body to the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal at the same level in an attempt to promote detection of slight widening of the spinal canal due to an expanding lesion.
The range of this ratio was also relatively wide, but this ratio may sensitively change in cases of spinal cord tumors, which have been known to produce concave scalloping of the posterior aspect of the vertebral body in addition to expansion of the spinal canal.
The diameter of the cervical spinal canal of the male group was slightly larger than that of the female group, and the sexual difference was statistically significant.
